Well, it’s that time of the year again – Christmas shopping time. After the disgusting display I saw and heard of at the department stores on Black Friday, I knew that once again I’d better write one of my annual reminder articles.
We all want to provide our families with a merry Christmas. But as I always say, Christmas isn’t a time for receiving – or giving material things. It’s a time for giving of yourself.
All too many people think that Christmas is a time for filling orders. People tell you what they want and you do your damnedest to comply. As Fred Wynn said in the movie “Miracle On 34th Street”, “Christmas isn’t just a day – it’s a frame of mind.” That has gotten lost in these modern times of commercialism and order filling.
Let’s never forget what Christmas is really all about.
Let’s also remember that when you give in to the commercialism, you’re feeding the beast that is destroying you. All too often people go into heavy debt to fulfill the gift wishes of their family. Is this what Christmas is all about? Hardly.
I have never forgotten a particular conversation between Scrooge and and his nephew Fred:
Scrooge: Merry Christmas – Humbug! What good has Christmas ever done you?
Fred: Uncle there are many things that have done me good even though they haven’t fattened my purse a bit. Christmas is such a thing. I’ve always looked upon Christmas as a good time. A charitable time. It’s the only time that people seem to remember that we’re all members of the same family, and as members of the same family we owe each other some measure of warmth and comfort. And though it’s never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pockets I say it has done me good and will do me good and I say God bless it!
Dickens hit the nail on the head. Unlike so many today, he got it.
You can bet that on Black Friday when people are literally trampling over each other for bargains, the wealthy owners of the stores – like the Walton family are sitting in their mansions or penthouses watching it all on TV and laughing at what a bunch of fools we all are for falling for their advertising.
Judeo-Capitalism is a beast – and it is forever hungry. It feeds on our hard earned money and it never gets enough. Are you going to continue to feed this beast that is driving you into debt or will you use a little restraint and not kill yourself filling every order your family makes?
You can have a very merry Christmas for less. Buy presents, but don’t overdo it. Especially when it comes to the children, if you give them everything they desire they grow up with a feeling of entitlement. When they reach adulthood they’ll get a slap in the face from reality. Either they’ll have learned a valuable lesson, or join the growing ranks of young people who feel they are being cheated by life because they haven’t gotten everything they think they are entitled to. Use a little restraint this year.
Comrades, have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Hail Victory!
